Funny Blogs vs. Venting Blogs vs. Mommy Blogs ...

Ray and I have done months of research on this topic and have discovered some key differences between the different types of blogs out there, namely content and who is commenting. Here is a list of helpful information when navigating the wonderful world of blogs. We like lists, they spare us the humiliation of grammatical errors.

Angry Venting blogs- for some odd reason usually go hand in hand with politics, although some are used to publicly humiliate lazy friends or by religious fanatics all equally linked to Satan and possibly Wal Mart(according to our sources in Arkansas). The folks who comment on these blogs are usually full of testosterone and ready for a battle. In the old days these same types of people could be found in angry mobs wielding torches.

Mommy Blogs- used mostly by those who wish to keep in contact with friends and loved ones far away but also used by some who need constant reassurance that their children are good looking, talented, and academically above average. The lovely people commenting on these blogs I like to call the support team, they are quick to respond to new pictures with oohs and ahhs and an encouraging comment such as " wow Johnny sure is a genius" !

Funny Blogs - So far we have found that they are elusive not unlike Big Foot and we have only found a couple worthy of our time. Some are crude and some are side splitting depending on what ones flavor of humor is. The comments found on these are usually done in the spirit of adding to the joke. Strangers commenting to each other on a funny post always seem to lead to more laughs which according to recent studies leads to a longer life and almost instantaneous weight loss. ( Okay that last part was a lie) but I swear it makes me feel better about being fat.

Any Comments?

I think my biggest pet peve is when people use their blogs to bash on others such as friends and/or family members. I view my blog (and others that I look at) as a journal of sorts. I think that it is a great way to document things that you and your children do. I just think the whole "bashing others", or "venting" should be done behind doors to a spouse or close friend. It is hard for me to tolerate.

I used to be more of a mommyblog, but gave that up two years ago when I realized how badly it was hurting my kids' privacy. Today, at my 13yo's request, I was browsing his forum posts and to my amazement found he'd posted some very personal information about me. Let it be a lesson to all mommybloggers out there - what goes around comes around, and karma really does exist.
Right now? I'm still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up. Mostly I blog because I have a lot of funny stories to tell. Also because I have more opinions than I know what to do with.

Heather you are correct. Those are the worst. Do people actually use their blogs to bash on friends? Amazing. I have yet to see that.

Ambie, if you go to my blog and click on a few, you will see. It makes me really sick to my stomach to see stuff like that. Cant we all just get along?????!!!!!!!!!!!

what kind is yours?

ours is a "maybe we'd have more friends if people can't actually see us" blog.

heather, I've occasionally seen what you've described and I too find it distasteful... and man, that Ambie has just been getting on my nerves...I mean, I love her soooo much

goldie, the free, personal info on children such as birthdays and nicknames, etc, on blogs freaks me out, especially after watching "to catch a predator"

Cheryl, funny.

Only compared to some Cheryl, and to Loni yes. Oh wait that wasn't a yes or no question.

I just love Ray. I feel blessed to have such a tolerant friend.

Ray, no, I never got as far as posting their real names, pix, etc. It's just that one day I realized that "funny stories about kids" are suddenly not as funny when you are the kid in question and it's your antics posted on the Internet for everyone to see. Also, there is no such thing as Internet anonymity. One of the people on my blog roll lives five minutes away from me and our kids are in the same class... Needless to say we both discovered all this long after we had started blogging! Awkward. Double the awkward factor when the kids start asking each other, "so have you seen my mom's latest pictures on her site?" Yikes.

When I started blogging, my youngest son was 9 and his name starts with K, so I referred to him as K9. To this day, I have people come to my blog as a result of google searches for "K9 love"... wtf??

Excellent post, you hit the nail on the head with this one. I have to say that your blog has me very intrigued and wanting to read more. You are an incredibly gifted writer (though I can't tell if there is one author here or two). I'm going to read on because everything I've read thus far is extremely entertaining.

I have two blogs, one about my family stuff (for the relatives to keep up if they want to) and one for me to belly ache or get excited about personal things on my mind. Your blog here motivates me to want to be more matter of fact about day to day stuff but I struggle to see anything beyond monotony with my day to day stuff.

Any way, I think it is the gifted writing that has made all of your posts come alive.
